Saving a Cultural Treasure for Future Generations

Founded in 2022, Friends of Carrington is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to restoring and preserving the historic Carrington House—a landmark that has quietly shaped American arts and LGBTQ+ culture for nearly a century.

Our Mission

We exist to ensure that this extraordinary site remains accessible for Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines residents, visitors, and the broader public who recognize its profound cultural significance. The Carrington House isn't just a building; it's a living piece of history that deserves to be experienced and celebrated by future generations.

The Rescue Effort

After more than twenty years of weathering Fire Island's harsh coastal elements, the Carrington House faced an uncertain future. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Fire Island Land Trust, critical funding was secured to begin the complex restoration process. Through careful rehabilitation work, the property's roofs, windows, and siding have been meticulously repaired or replaced. In 2022, the National Park Service completed the interior restoration of the cottage, breathing new life into spaces where literary and artistic history was made.

Our Leadership

Our board reflects the collaborative spirit that defines Fire Island's unique communities. We're proudly led by residents of both Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines, working alongside the presidents of each community's resident association and the superintendent of Fire Island National Seashore. This partnership ensures that local voices guide our preservation efforts while maintaining the highest standards of historic stewardship.
