Friends of Carrington, Inc.  is pleased to announce a special exhibit, Fire Island and Dance: The Forties, in honor of the DRA’s 30th annual Fire Island Dance Festival in Fire Island Pines, NY.   Featuring the photographs and artwork of George Daniell, a gay artist who summered on Fire Island from the late 1930’s until 1961, the exhibit is comprised of his Fire Island and Dance photography of the 1940’s.

The images, in most cases, never before seen, consist of original Daniell prints and estate reprints from recently discovered work in the George Daniell Archive.  The works will be available for purchase to benefit the not-for-profit Friends of Carrington.  The collection has been assembled by Gina DeJoy from the Archive and curated by Bill Hildebrandt of Friends of Carrington.  Additional advisors include Phil Chan and Kyle Froman and Pat Hildebrandt.

Purchased in 1927 by Frank Carrington, theater producer and founder of the Papermill Playhouse in NJ, the 6 acre estate, consisted of a house and guest cottage and was his seasonal home for 50 years, becoming National Seashore property in 1975.  The cottage was Lincoln Kirstein’s summer home from 1948-1952 and Jerome Robbins in 1956, embellishing its dance history.

Friends of Carrington, Inc. is a newly formed nonprofit, dedicated to the preservation and programing of the historic Carrington Estate, a National Park Service LGBTQ+ landmark on Fire Island between the communities of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove.  For further information visit www.friendsofcarrington.org
